• I would like to change my theme but no themes show up in the Available Themes area in the admin Design panel. When I say no themes I mean no themes, including the default and basic themes that load with wordpress.

    This problem started when I upgraded to 2.6, btw. At the time I didn’t think much of it because I didn’t want to change my theme.

    Please, please don’t tell me how to upload a theme. I know how to do that and even uploaded the theme that is currently being used. If the problem was with my uploading then the two themes that come with wordpress would be available. They are not.

    Thanks for any help you can give.

  • First, consider reloading the page in your browser. This might help. Are you having any other problems with your WordPress blog?

    I’ve reloaded the browser page. I know how to upload themes and until I upgraded to 2.6 I never had a problem uploading themes or getting them to work.

    No themes show up in the Available Themes area. Not even the themes that come with WordPress. The only other problem I have with my wordpress blog is that I keep having to sign in to get into the admin area. Again, that’s a problem that started with the upgrade to 2.6. And no, I don’t delete cookies related to my blog in my web browser.

    Well, I know you said you didn’t want to be told how to upload themes, but this issue is usually related to a faulty folder hierarchy. Can you look at your site folder structure via FTP? Sometimes a theme will have a second folder inside the main theme folder. If that second folder doesn’t have files that point to subsequent folders, WP will sometimes not go any farther on its own. It sees the first folder as being empty, even though there is another folder inside with all the files. So you have to move that second folder up one level, just under the Themes folder.

    I appreciate you trying to help me.

    I just checked via FTP and each theme folder has only the one folder for the theme. They do not have a folder with another folder for the theme inside.

    BTW, I’ve used the instant upgrade function to upgrade to 2.6.2 when it came out. Before that, I used a plug-in that did the same function. The classic and default themes were automatically uploaded and those themes also do not show up in the available theme area. I didn’t have any problems until I upgraded to 2.6.

    I can view your default theme stylesheet as well as the header image,

    //cantkeepquiet.com/wp-content/themes/default/style.css

    //cantkeepquiet.com/wp-content/themes/default/images/kubrickheader.jpg

    …so indeed it does indicate that something else may be happening.

    How do the folder and file ownership and permissions look? Consistent with what you would expect?

    (@mulligan)

    I’ve set the permissions at 755 and 666 and I’ve tried 777 and 666. Neither produces any differences. File ownership looks fine to me.

    Thanks for any help or advice you can give me.

    That is odd. I know an errant folder read permission will make a theme disappear, and a read error on the themes folder itself will make them all disappear from the admin panel. At the risk of suggesting something you may have already tried, is there any chance that for some reason a plugin may be causing some type of strange behavior? I am assuming you had them all disabled during the upgrade, but perhaps disabling them again and rechecking the theme’s status might reveal something. I’m only guessing at this point. Best of luck.

    [Edit] …just out of curiosity, did you upgrade WordPress using an automatic upgrade plugin?

    Yes, he did. See above

    However, the default theme is there:
    https://cantkeepquiet.com/wp-content/themes/default/style.css
    if you cannot see it that automatic gizmo screwed up something.

    ..ahh, yes. I missed that.

    Thread Starter mulligan

    (@mulligan)

    Thanks Clayton. I’ll give that a try and let you know what happens.

    Well, that was the problem. I deactivated all the plugins and the themes showed up. I then reactivated them in groups of three until the themes disappeared when I hit reload.

    It was the Stray Random Quotes plugin that caused the problem.

    Thanks for all your help!

    I hate it when something that simple throws a Spanner in the Works.

    ( sorry about that… Rod Stewart was just on the radio ).

    I’m glad you got it figured out. Peace!
