Avatars Suddenly Disappeared

    I recently built a site using Buddypress and Multisite and I had everything working great. I was able to upload, crop and see avatars but now I’m getting the ‘Mystery Man’ on all the users (except for one user) avatar which I set for users without any avatar. If I try to re-upload my new avatar I get this error: Upload Failed! Error was: Unable to create directory /avatars/1. Is its parent directory writable by the server? Also, the avatars that disappeared are still available in their original folders on the server.

    I have set the avatar directory to 777 permissions.
