Avoid Duplicates /Unique records ( based on email)

Looked at the docs and the forums, but a very basic question I have ( Sorry if this has been asked before)

I want to be able to avoid duplicate participants at sign up. –

So is there a way to make the system check if email already exists then reject the signup with a message “Already exists”
