Background color will not change

The background color will not change. It stays white, regardless of selecting a different color (or even an image) in APPEARANCE > BACKGROUND.
If it helps, this didn’t start happening until we installed the WP Meetup widget (https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/wp-meetup), which we have since uninstalled.
