Background on content boxes and post grid

If I understood correctly this is what you’re trying to achieve https://screencast.com/t/E41qTASUP. If that is the case you can do this with some custom CSS. Please try adding the following CSS code to Appearance -> Theme Options -> Custom CSS:

.home-content-boxes {
    background-color: rgba(0,0,0,0.5);
}

.home div#primary {
    background-color: rgba(0,0,0,0.5);
}

this will place black background with 50% transparency on home content boxes and your posts only on home page.
