• In order to avoid losing my entire website when I update the software, how do I back up? Many of the links to instructions are dead and I honestly have no idea what I’m doing. So directions or at least a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

  • I suggest a BackUp/Restore plugin. I use AkeebaBackupWP from Akeebabackup.com but there are a variety of plugins you can use.

Just be sure to make sure the method you use also backs up the database.

Alternatively you can just download your WP-Content folder via FTP and use phpMyAdmin to dump the database and download the sql file.

OK, this is a great start. Thank you. I’m now trying to install one of the plugins, but for some reason I can’t seem to find the ‘plug in’ section on my wordpress dashboard.

Backstory: I inherited the management of this website, so it’s been done by a professional developer. I’m not familiar with wordpress AT ALL nor am I a developer. Halp..!

It seems the current version of wordpress the site is running on is from 5 years ago. Is it possible that none of these plugins will be compatible? Is that maybe why I’m not able to see the option to install plugins at all?

    Hi @mrklund

That could be an issue, but you should still be able to see an option to install plugins. If I’m understanding you correctly. Not sure if you are up to the task of updating your WordPress site to the current version. If you do decide to I’d definitely do as Hudson Valley Web Design suggested.

Once you get that squared away there are tons of backup plugins to choose from. I use BackupBuddy personally. Works great, and going forward I’d suggest backing up your database at least once a week and a complete backup at least once every 3-4 weeks.

If you do not see a plugins link on the left menu you may not have Admin (superuser) privileges on the site.
