• Hi All,

I need to backup two sites that are being hosted by Aplus.net who have their own backup software that is not very easy to use.

Is it possible for me to fully back up both of these sites using FIlezilla?

I need to do this both for archival purposes and in the event that I move to another host.

I’ve been told that I specifically need to download something or other using the Aplus interface but since I don’t understand what this is or why it is I am having a hard time remembering what to do to get this done.

    Thanks for any help.

    Jon

  • basically you need to download (filezilla is great) your /wp-content folder on a fairly regular basis as this contains your themes, plugins, images, etc.

however, it’s more important to back up your database frequently as that’s where all of the data is stored – posts, pages, comments and much more
you can do this easily through the host’s phpmyadmin or install a plugin

    Hi Samuel,

Thanks so much. I’m printing the docs now for review tomorrow.

    In Filezilla I see a “formpig.com” folder with a cgi-bin (1) , logs (2), private (3) and public (4) folders.

In the public > blog folder I see:
    “wp-admin”
    “wp-content”
    “wp-includes”

At the moment I am not seeing a “database” folder.

I will read the documents but is there a rock solid way for me to back this up using Filezilla and/or a rock solid way to do this in an /automated/ way where I can set it to do this once every three months and I delete the older versions?

I thing one thing I am really worried about is that I recall APlus telling me that I /have/ to backup the – maybe it was the database folder (?) from /within/ the APlus website which is super funky and which I don’t want to use (partly because it it too buggy and idiosyncratic).

I don’t understand why this would be the case and I’d like to make sure I understand why I can’t back this up with Filezilla and why I am using something else instead so that it is more reliable.

    Thanks!

    Jon

    Assuming I manually backed

    there isn’t a database folder
log in to your host’s phpmyadmin
    select your database
    click on “export” at top
    select all tables
    download

or just install the plugin I linked to above

    Hi Samuel.

I have downloaded the plugin you recommended from Matzko’s Blog. I’m a little concerned about two things:

    1. His instructions recommend “1. Click Manage menu in your WordPress admin area” and “2. Click the Backup sub-menu” and I don’t find either of these in my Admin Area.

I did activate the plugin and I was able to hit the backup after excluding post revisions and spam comments:

However, this backup went VERY FAST – like in a minute or two and I have run into an issue in the past where doing this via the APlus.net website did not completely backup everything or simply effectively gave me a /file/ with simply a name because I didn’t check some box somewhere.

Is there a way to verify that this in fact worked? I’m looking around for the file on my Computer and I actually can’t even find the file. Do you know where this puts it when you check “My Computer”?

I need to get this going and short of emailing the developer I was hoping to get a tad more advice.

    Hi Samuel.

OK. So this is an sql file that is 2.2. MB in size?

Is there a way to figure out what it is and is not backing up?

I really want to do a full backup of the site…

    Thank you!

    I see. Hmmm.

I download the sql file with the Matzko plugin and automate this once a week and then I backup the:

    formpig.com folder which includes:
    > cgi-bin
    > logs
    > private and
    > public

    – by manually downloading the formpig.com folder once in awhile when I feel like it is that right?

    Thanks.

Hello, how are you? I was wondering if you might like to use xcloner, this is the link https://www.xcloner.com/

I have used it in the past and I am currently using it now. It works very well.

    I hope this helps you

    Kind regards

There is an amazing plugin that can do that for you. It makes backups of your database and files into one zip. It’s called myEASYbackup.

    Hi seth.

I am trying this one. Do you happen to know how to fix this error in red when I go to the Tools > myEASYbackup section of the Admin Tools?

“The WordPress administration path: /services3/webpages/util/u/n/universal100.site.aplus.net/formpig.com/public/blog//wp-admin does not exists on the server.
The path to mysqldump: /mysqldump is wrong.
It is not possible to proceed until you fix the above problems!”

Also, I took a look at the documentation but do you happen to know if it is possible to download directly to my hard drive? What about setting a monthly backup schedule…?

    Thank you for the advice.
