When I add an apostrophe to a description in a gallery, there is a “\” added on the published page next to the apostrophe. I am using:

    NextGEN Gallery – Version 3.59.4

    WordPress 6.6.2 running Divi theme.

This has not occurred with other galleries. Visit https://teaching.nmc.edu/whats-on-your-desk-scott-goethals/ and click on one of the images on the right in the top line. The lamp or the poem both produce this issue.

    Hi @mdelonger

I am glad to help. This seems to be an issue with some sever configuration, the backslash is used to escape symbols, this might also be somehow related to ModSec or something similar (we have seen cases where special characters trigger fals security warnings, so escaping symbols can prevent this).

I would suggest you to check for plugin and theme conflicts first, just in case.

Deactivate all your plugins except NextGEN Gallery and switch to a Twenty Series theme, then check again. If the issue is gone, set your theme and check again, if the issue does not appear start reactivating your plugins one at a time. Check after each.

Then if that does not help find a cause, reach out to your hosting company and ask them if there is any option on the server that might cause the special character escaping.

    Hi @mdelonger ,

We haven’t heard back from you in a few days, so I’m going to go ahead and close this thread for now. But if you’d like us to assist further, please feel welcome to continue the conversation (please just see my post above).

    Thanks!

Thank you for your reply. I will start with WordFence to see if that is causing the issue and then try the other suggestions.

There is a workaround. Instead of the apostrophe use '
But this is only a workaround. Any subsequent change will cause the problem to re-occur.
eg: If you subsequently change the description of the Gallery, the problem re-occurs.

    Hi nextgen,
I’m reopening this topic as I can confirm that it’s a nextgen bug happening on my site. When a new image is created with either of a ‘ (apostrophe) or ” (quote) character then instead of the character being written directly into the database it is entered escaped i.e. \’ or \”, and is then displayed in that manner when the image is viewed. As an example, here’s the nextgen gallery editor view of an entry:

and this is what is stored:

NGG version 3.59.5 running on WordPress 6.6.2. This has been confirmed with all plugins other than NGG disabled and the vanilla 2024 theme. It is something that has recently changed as images stored a few months back have no issue it’s only more recent ones that show this issue. Unfortunately I don’t have an exact date of when it happened. Please address this urgently as the workaround of entering as ' or " is not suitable for the end user of this site.
