Backup archive and database encryption

  • You have a very efficient plugin and the task based backup system brings a very huge among of flexibility.

    I’m a fan of your plugin like many others wordpress user but I can not use it on a production site because backwpup doesn’t provide strong encryption for backup archives witch can include the complete wordpress installation, strategic files, etc.. nor strong encryption for the database.

    I can’t leave an unencrypted backup on my servers as well as on a backup server or a storage service. Event if storage services are providing encryption for uploaded files,they are practically all US based under Patriot Act and other liberticide laws.I just wanna protect our privacy especially as we are not US citizens.

    It hurts because backwpup has the best user interface, it’s very flexible and I never find another wordpress backup plugin with that level of quality.

    Are you planing to introduce strong encryption capabilities in backwpup ?

    If I may, I think you’ve 3 possibilities.

    The first one is using a javascript encryption tool witch is certainly simpler to implement in your plugin. But on the other hand javascript encryption has a controversial reputation because it’s less secure than other solution
    The second possibility is to implement something using pgp witch is installed by default with all Linux distro and all Unix BSD distro and can even by installed on a Windows server. PGP is very efficient but on the other hand it’s more complicated to implement.Take a look to that
    The third possibility is using mcrypt and the php binding php-mcrypt.
