    Hi!

I’ve been having problems with the online backup. While backing up, it tries to backup the captcha folders from the theme and from a plug-in, which takes hours and results in a time out.

    wp-content/uploads/wpcf7_captcha
    wp-content/themes/modernize_v2-09/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha
    wp-content/themes/modernize_v2-23/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha

I have tried excluding those specific folders in the Filesystem Excludes, but I don’t seem to get the correct root. I’ve tried numerous variations, but every time I try a backup it still tries to backup the folders I want to exclude.

Here are all the variations I tried out:

    htdocs/wp-content/uploads/wpcf7_captcha
    uploads/wpcf7_captcha
    wp-content/uploads/wpcf7_captcha
    ../wp-content/uploads/wpcf7_captcha
    ../htdocs/wp-content/uploads/wpcf7_captcha
    wp-content/updraft
    cons
    ../htdocs/wp-content/themes/modernize_v2-09/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha
    ../htdocs/wp-content/themes/modernize_v2-23/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha
    htdocs/wp-content/themes/modernize_v2-09/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha
    htdocs/wp-content/themes/modernize_v2-23/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha
    /htdocs/wp-content/themes/modernize_v2-09/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha
    /htdocs/wp-content/themes/modernize_v2-23/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha
    /wp-content/themes/modernize_v2-09/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha
    /wp-content/themes/modernize_v2-23/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha
    wp-content/themes/modernize_v2-09/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha
    wp-content/themes/modernize_v2-23/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha
    themes/modernize_v2-09/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha
    themes/modernize_v2-23/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha
    ../themes/modernize_v2-09/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha
    ../themes/modernize_v2-23/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha
    modernize_v2-09/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha
    modernize_v2-23/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha
    ../wp-content/themes/modernize_v2-09/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha
    ../wp-content/themes/modernize_v2-23/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha
    ../../wp-content/themes/modernize_v2-09/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha
    ../../wp-content/themes/modernize_v2-23/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha

Could you please tell me how to exclude these folders, so that I can finally do a backup?

    Thank you!

    Cheers,
    Vanesa

In general settings just above where you put in the excludes it will say something like this:

For example, to exclude /websites/1000/public_html/folder/cache, enter folder/cache into the box below on its own line.

So if you need to exclude /websites/1000/public_html/wp-content/plugins/really-simple-captcha you should enter “wp-content/plugins/really-simple-captcha”

If you run the backup and it fails still you can view the event log and it will say if it skipped the folder or not.

The paths in the exclusions need to be full path. Nothing should start with “../” unless you ticked the “Backup the WordPress parent folder” and want to exclude something in there. If this is unticked, or you don’t want to exclude anything in the parent folder, you should never use “../”

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Jason,

Thank you for your answer, but I read the explanation on how to exclude.

Since the folder I am trying to exclude is located here:
    wp-content/themes/modernize_v2-23/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha

That is exactly what I put in the exclude box. I even tried out different variations as you can see above, to be sure, since the first attempts didn’t work and I simply kept trying.

While the backup is in process, the monitoring activity still shows this for example:

    Backed up file /htdocs/wp-content/uploads/wpcf7_captcha/462004130.png. 57%

Even though I also put the “wp-content/uploads/wpcf7_captcha” in the exclude box, also in different variations as you can see above. It still tries to backup that folder.

Can you please explain to me, what I have to put in the exclude box to exclude the three folders I mentioned above?

    Thank you for your help,
    Vanesa

I updated your Plugin, only added the following lines to the exclude box,

    wp-content/uploads/wpcf7_captcha
    wp-content/themes/modernize_v2-09/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha
    wp-content/themes/modernize_v2-23/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha

in case the others were creating any confusion and started backup… and it still tries to back up the excluded folders…

This is what the Monitor Activity just posted:

    Backed up file /htdocs/wp-content/themes/modernize_v2-09/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha/tmp/673992512.png. 54%

    Hi Vanessa,

Can you give me what the explanation says in your plugin, including the path? So I can try test this and see if it’s anything to do with the path to your WordPress?

    Jason.

    (@bikeboutique)

And I also added the line

    wp-content/plugins/really-simple-captcha

to the exclude box, even though, when I go in the ftp, the “really-simple-captcha” folder ist not located in wp-content/plugins/

And again… it still tries to back it up:

    Monitor Activity
    Backed up file /htdocs/wp-content/themes/modernize_v2-09/include/plugin/really-simple-captcha/tmp/536756244.png. 53%

Here is the explanation text on my plugin:

Custom filesystem excludes can be specified here, one per line, relative to the following folder: /mnt/webi/b0/67/53424467/htdocs
For example, to exclude /mnt/webi/b0/67/53424467/htdocs/folder/cache, enter folder/cache into the box below on its own line.
If backing up the WordPress parent folder, you can exclude items at that level by prefixing the entry with “../” (dot dot forward-slash) like this: ../parent/exclude

    (@driskell)

Can you uninstall and delete the current version and install this one and see if it works?

It will also detect excludes and folders containing the phrase “wpcf7_captcha” and print out some information in event log so we can work out why the exclude isn’t matching, if it still doesn’t work.

Just note that you will lose plugin configuration when you remove and install so backup your filesystem exclude list before hand. Existing local backups will be kept in wp-content/backups and not removed – when plugin is reinstalled it will detect them.

    Hi Jason,

I tried to backup with the plugin you sent me. At the beginning everything was going fine. It was taking ages and got stuck at 81%, though the Monitor Activity continued to show files that were being backed up.
I didn’t see it backing up any of the folders I had added to the exclude, which is already good.

But after 28 Minutes, the backup failed anyway.

    This is the log:
