I updated my site to 3.9.2 today, but before I did, I backed it up using WordPress Database Backup. Nothing has changed about my site between June and now, and I already had a backup following my previous update back in June (I always make a new backup before I install WP updates and plugins, even though it’s essentially a duplicate), however, my backup file sizes have increased from 1,401kb to 72,094kb.

This is a HUGE increase, obviously. I created another backup after updating to 3.9.2, and it is also 72mb, which seems excessive. The files have also changed from being GZ to SQL…

Can anyone explain this to me, and maybe how to get the size back down? I’m a casual wordpress user.

    Thanks!

GZ (gzip) is a type of file compression, where as SQL is the database type.

Perhaps the file size difference is because you’re comparing the current uncompressed SQL backup to the old compressed GZ backup.

Also, just because you haven’t done anything with your site doesn’t mean you haven’t been collecting tons of spam comments. Check the Spam subsection of the Comments section of your blog’s Dashboard, there will be an Empty Spam button there.

If you’re still having trouble with the plugin, I recommend asking over at https://www.ads-software.com/support/plugin/wp-database-backup so the plugin’s developers and support community can see this.

Yes, it was because of spam comments. The file is now only 413k- quite a reduction. Thank you!
