• Hi

Ive read the intial post about posting here, but I couldnt find anyspecific details about my situation so apologies if has been covered.

My business like many, during covid got hit badly, I carried on until July last year but since then its ceised to exist. Im still paying fasthost monthly to keep the site online and dont want to pay anymore but keep the website for now as have recently moved and will look to start again possibly in the next couple of years. Ive just started backing my site up with updraftplus. WIll these be enough if I want to restore the site in a few years say? Or do I need to use a more detailed programme as aposed to an app?

Any help would be greatly apprecaited.

    Kind regards

  • It sounds like you’re taking the right steps to preserve your website for the future. UpdraftPlus is a good choice for backing up your WordPress site, as it’s a reliable and popular plugin. Here are a few additional tips to ensure your backups are suitable for long-term storage and restoration:

    1. Frequency of Backups: Ensure that you’re backing up your site regularly. Depending on how often your site changes, you might want to schedule daily, weekly, or monthly backups.
    2. Storage Location: Store your backups in a secure location. UpdraftPlus allows you to store backups on remote storage services like Dropbox, Google Drive, or Amazon S3, which can be more reliable for long-term storage than keeping them solely on your hosting server.
    3. Backup Files: Make sure your backups include both your website files and the database. This ensures that you can fully restore your site if needed.
    4. Testing Backups: Periodically test your backups to ensure they are working correctly. You can do this by restoring a backup to a test environment and checking that everything functions as expected.
    5. Documentation: Keep a record of your backup schedule, where backups are stored, and any other relevant information that will help you restore your site in the future.
    6. Stay Informed: Stay updated with WordPress and UpdraftPlus updates to ensure compatibility and security of your backups.
    7. Consider Professional Services: If your website is critical and you want to ensure the best possible chance of a successful restoration, consider using professional backup services that specialize in long-term storage and restoration of WordPress sites.

By following these tips, you should be well-prepared to restore your website in the future, even if it’s been a few years since you last operated it.

A simple backup plugin will work as long as you can download both the files from your site and your database. https://learn.www.ads-software.com/lesson/how-to-backup-your-site/

Updraft is good – I like Duplicator better. Make the backup, then download it and the install app to a local pc. Only issue you miht have down the line (year or so from now)is that some of your existing plugins might not get upgraded to whatver version of Wrdpress, php, mysql, etc that you;ll be installing to in the future. So when you go to re-install, you start getting errors about “not compatable”. Understand? But there’s no way to get around it – who knows what will stil be here a year from now.

    Hi

Sorry for delay I didnt expect such quick replies, so thank you for that. Its great all the feedback. My main query now is, is it possible to download the whole site off of wordpress and store it somewhere for when I use it again or is this not possible and I would have to start a new site in the future. I really like my site but cant afford to keep it going at the moment, so will have to take down. From what you all have said it seems I can back up in case I lose it, but not info on actually taking the site completely off of the internet. Im well aware that I used a wordpress template so this might not be possible but could someone please give me an answer on this?

    Kindest regards

I like the plugin “backwpup”. It does a decent job of backing up your site, including the database. There are a number of other backup plugins, too. Once backed up, you can restore your site to any other host.
