Since yesterday I’ve been trying to complete backups on my three sites. Each time, the backup appears to stall before any files are sent to remote storage. Eventually, it will show a partial backup under my listed backups as (Not finished). On all three sites, the backup stalls at the same point, just after the plugins folder as listed as 100%. Nothing else happens beyond that point. Hoping someone here can help me figure out what’s going wrong.

Here’s a screenshot of the last of one of the logs.

Link to a full log file: https://pastebin.com/cwQ3AqfQ#QEL2XMLv

I do eventually get an email saying the backup finished, apparently unsuccessfully. Here’s the text of that email (sans the marketing stuff):

    Backup of: (my site)
    UpdraftPlus WordPress backup is complete.
Backup contains: Files and database (Full backup)
Latest status: The backup attempt has finished, apparently unsuccessfully

    * Your website is visited infrequently and UpdraftPlus is not getting the resources it hoped for; please read this page: https://updraftplus.com/faqs/why-am-i-getting-warnings-about-my-site-not-having-enough-visitors/

P.S. I have never encountered that warning about infrequent traffic before; I do have traffic and show up in search engines just fine, so I’m not sure why I would be getting that now.

    Hi,

The backup appears to have been timed out or killed.
Can you ask your host/server admin to increase your server resources? Such as I/O limit, maximum_execution_timeout and site memory.

Also could you try to reduce the backup archive split size. This will split the backup into smaller, more manageable files.
To do this, open the ‘expert settings’ section of the UpdraftPlus Settings tab, and find the ‘split backups every’ option. Set this to 25Mb save your settings and run a new process.

    Thanks,
    Bryle

I am having the same issue. My backup ran fine on Wednesday but I have tried repeatedly to run manual backups since and am met with the same issues. After many hours, I finally get an email saying that the backup attempt has finished, apparently unsuccessfully. I added set_time_limit(300); to my wp_config and in expert settings, I set the ‘split backups every’ option from 250MB to 100MB but still no joy. I disconnected and reconnected my Dropbox and tried running again (which is where I am now) but there are not even new files in my Dropbox account. I am not sure what else to try. I do see this error in the log multiple times but the status page is less than helpful. Any ideas?

@bcrodua I reduced the backup size to 25 MB. It’s been running almost two hours and this is where it is currently stalled.

I’ve noticed a few things. First, currently at least the log file doesn’t display; it’s stuck on “loading the log file.” This true even if I switch to another computer with a different OS.

Second, every time I run another of these failed backup attempts, my web disk usage by Updraft increases (which of course is not helpful if this is a resource issue). I’ve tried several time to go in and delete the failed backups. I will get a message saying a file is deleted, but it still appears in the display at the bottom of the page.

Moreover, after deletion they still show up listed at the bottom of the page EVEN THOUGH I have set in my account settings to only retain two backups.

@bcrodua Realized I was having WIFI issues on some devices so I switched to a hard-wired PC and was able to get the current log file. It’s here: https://pastebin.com/J9f5H8pD

Here also is the current status of the Backup I am currently attempting:

Same exact situation for me. I have tried to delete 2 failed backups that are still showing up exactly like yours.

Hey, @cbrendlinger, out of curiosity, which theme are you currently using and is it updated to the latest version? I’m using a child version of 2017, but it was updated as of the last release and has been working fine. Not sure if that is related, just grasping at straws, myself.

@aprildmoore, I am using an old theme but it is up to date as well. I just cannot imagine that it is a theme issue.

@aprildmoore, I have another site running the same theme and had no trouble running the backup on that one. Did you check the Updraft folder in wp-content? The files do not seem to match the existing backups. I remain perplexed.

I took a look at the file sizes, but I did not compare the two (between the existing files and the backups). Thanks. I will do so. In my case, all three of my sites are suffering the same issue. All using the same theme. So that likely eliminates that as the issue.

Im having the exact same problem. On several sites, different themes and so on. But all on the same host. The host has tried raising resources.. but doesnt feel like its the issue.

If selecting to only backup db, it totally take 12 sec before it halts on 100% on upload to Dropbox, and just sits there until the timeout from Dropbox comes.

Its been going on since about the same time the other people here reported it starting.

This morning I ran a backup successfully but had to uncheck the “send to remote storage” option which, of course, is not ideal. I am going to see if I can find a different remote storage option besides Dropbox and see if I can find some joy with that. I see that there are also posts in the Dropbox forum. https://www.dropboxforum.com/t5/Integrations/Updraftplus-can-t-upload-anymore/m-p/795982/thread-id/14117

@bcrodua, In the hopes that maybe a log file will help determine what is going on, I submit to you the log of the first failure which, by the way, took many hours to fail. https://pastebin.com/FQm0WaZ9

@cbrendlinger Thank you for these helpful updates! I will see if I can send to a different remote storage as well.

Posting for @bcrodua the final log file I received this morning when Updraft finally gave up on the backup I started yesterday.

@aprildmoore I successfully backed up the site to UpdraftVault. They are offering a 1 month free trial for $1. It went smooth as butter. So, it is definitely Dropbox specific or just clever marketing by Updraft. I haven’t yet decided what I will do in the long term but for now, I am pretty thrilled to have an external backup.

I can see that you are getting a low visitor warning. The low visitors means the backup is slow and the connection to Dropbox is timing out and being dropped by Dropbox

I would recommend setting up a number of dummy visits to the site via an external cronjob.

These are automated tasks performed by the server.

You will need to set up an automated task to visit your site (please set the cron job to visit: https://yourdomain.com/wp-cron.php?doing_wp_cron )every 1 – 2 minutes (This will also keep the rest of your WordPress scheduler running):

Your hosts may have a tool to set up a cronjob, or you can use an online  tool such as EasyCron
