    Hi,

At last 2 sites i installed, Backup original images is turned off

but still imagify keeps original images at /wp-content/uploads/backup and i delete

    manually after every batch.

    Any idea?

Also a generic question about backups.

As imagify retains the full (uploaded) image or more correctly replaces the original images with an optimized image why can not regenerate thumbnail from this optimized image as it still has the original dimensions if will change theme?

    Hello,

    Thank you for reaching out.

If the backup option is unchecked in Imagify settings, Imagify should not save the originals in /wp-content/uploads/backup. Can you please delete the folder and try uploading new image to see if the issue replicates?

    Best Regards,

No when we uload is ok, backups are made for the images of bulk optimization (i think not for all but for many)

    Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Even during bulk optimization, the originals should not be saved in the /backup folder if the backup option is unchecked. If this is occurring, it might be due to interference from another plugin, and some troubleshooting may help identify the cause.

Imagify requires the original uploaded image because it contains the necessary metadata to process optimization effectively. When the original image is saved in the /backup folder, it gives you the flexibility to:

    • Re-optimize the image if needed
    • Generate next-gen formats like WebP or AVIF
    • Restore the unoptimized version by replacing the optimized one

Regarding thumbnails, WordPress and your theme control their generation. For new uploads, Imagify will optimize all the thumbnails created by your theme. However, if new thumbnail sizes are introduced later, existing images won’t have those sizes until they are regenerated. Since Imagify doesn’t regenerate thumbnails, you would need a different plugin to handle that.

Let me know if this helps or if you have any further questions!

    Hi,

    Thanks for detailed reply.

I keep the old sites in a box just in case will need the original images but very rarely we change themes.

Regenerate is very easy with wp-cli and generate only missing dimensions.

Thinking though that once i regenerated in the past already optimized by imagify images and remember that worked fine even without the original images back.

Realized now that at one site only when backup is checked there are no backups and the opposite as i described earlier, contacted support already for this.

Btw settings where are saved in database to take a look if backup setting is stored incorrectly?

Thank toy again so much for this great plugin
