I keep messages like this one,

Adding batch to zip file (UpdraftPlus_ZipArchive): over 25 Mb added on this batch (276.1 Mb, 20919 files batched, 1 (18867) added so far); re-opening (prior size: 332845.4 Kb) (Oct 21 10:24:04)

It seems to be adding files one by one and notifying me with each file being added?
    Is that true?

    Hi,

In that log message – note that the file currently being added is 276.1 Mb. Do you have a lot of those?

    Best wishes,
    David

    Hi David,
Thank you for your prompt reply.

My understanding is that size is for the full archive not just a single one as files display in a different message like this one,

    File: uploads/2012/04/versa_capital_logo-150×75.png (exists: 1, is_readable: 1 size: 8329) (Oct 21 10:42:29)

And most of them are small in size.

So, why are they being added one by one and notifying me with each one added?

This message means that you have a particular single file which is 276Mb.

OK, so how can I stop it then?

Also, I just got notified of a new version of the plugin, can I upgrade the plugin while the backup is working or will that lead to errors?

    Thanks.

    Hi,

It might be best to update the plugin – the new version has a slightly tweaked algorithm which might help you.

You could also go into the ‘expert’ settings at the bottom of the ‘Settings’ tab, and reduce the ‘split’ size down to 250Mb. This would ensure that UD isn’t going to put your 276Mb file into an already-330Mb zip file, like in the log file above.

Updating might make the backup abort, or it might not notice – it depends on the timings. To kill it off, use the “delete schedule” link on the main settings tab, in the progress box.

    Best wishes,
    David

    Thank you for your reply.

I tried to use the delete schedule, but it wouldn’t stop and still working for over 24 hours now!

I also keep getting this error while working,
A zip error occurred – check your log for more details. (Oct 21 19:43:02)

    Does that mean anything?

And wouldn’t updating the plugin while it’s working break my site?

    Hi,

To force-stop the backup, you can kill the process on your webserver.

I also keep getting this error while working,

If you update to the latest version, this may be different, as we have some new code to deal with the most common cause.

And wouldn’t updating the plugin while it’s working break my site?

    No.

    HI David,
    Thank you for the answers.

I upgraded and things seem a lot nicer now and the new backup is running much faster after the upgrade.

Just a suggestion, looking at the backups, it doesn’t say how much is each zip archive and it’s always good to know that so I hope this is something that can be added to the plugin so I can know the file size before downloading it to my local PC.

    Hi,

Thank you – if you find UD useful, then please give it a positive review: https://www.ads-software.com/support/view/plugin-reviews/updraftplus?rate=5#postform

Different ways to know the size of the zips:

    – Triple click on the backup date in the “Restore” tab
    – Use the “raw backup list” link in the “Expert/Debugging” tab
    – Estimate it using the tool for counting your site size in the “Expert/Debugging” tab
    – It’s recorded in the backup log file
    – It’s in the email report, if you’re using UpdraftPlus Premium

    Best wishes,
    David

Thank you for the info and I sure will rate it soon.

Just to update you on my progress, things were going just fine until it reached files 17000 out of 21000 where is started to slow down again and gave the following error.

“The attempt to close the zip file returned an error (Unknown: ZipArchive does not return error messages). List of files we were trying to add follows (check their permissions). (Oct 22 10:47:24)”

I am sorry but I had already deleted that backup as it took a lot of space and I didn’t want to keep it!
