Backup timing out
-
I am having an issues with backing up. The backup seems to take forever (overnight) and there is no backup when I checked the next day. It did tell me that because it is taking too long I won’t receive any messages but nothing.

Hi @pbchambers26 ,
Thanks so much for reaching out. I’m sorry to hear that you’re having problems creating backup with Total Upkeep but lets see if we can help you out.
Generally when Total Upkeep backups fails without detecting any errors it means that the backup process was terminated directly by the web server, usually because of resource consumption.
One feature that we added to our Total Upkeep is the ability to change the compressor used for generating backup files which allows it to work in a variety of hosting environments.
What I would recommend you should try is changing the compressor type used for generating backup files. In most cases changing the Backup Compressor settings to use System Zip allowed most users to get backups working correctly.
Please let us know if the problem persists after switching to System Zip or if you have any other questions for us, we are always happy to help!
I changed to System Zip and ran the backup. It stopped at 50% so I left it for 4 hours. When I came back to it had a new backup in there but it only had half of my content.
Thanks for trying that out for us @pbchambers26.
Total Upkeep makes a log every time you create a backup, so that’s going to be the place we want to check next.
Navigate to?Total Upkeep > Tools > Logs?and look for your most recent log. It will have a name like?
archive-XXXXXXXX.log
. If you can copy that and paste it here, we’ll be able to get some more information about what went wrong. Thanks!
I couldn’t send the data any other way so I will attach it to a reply email. Can you send me an email so I can send it to you?

If you can copy that and paste it here, we’ll be able to get some more information about what went wrong.
That may create an unreadable mess in the forums. Past 10 lines or so it does not really work here.
If you need share that data please use a site like https://gist.github.com/ or https://pastebin.com/ instead and post the link to that paste.
Can you send me an email so I can send it to you?
Please don’t paste email addresses here, it gives the forum moderators a rash…
@brandonco If you want the user to contact you to send that log, and that like your support here is completely volunteer, then maybe a contact form URL instead of an email?
I think this is right –> https://gist.github.com/Peter5164/9c52528bbb7caf29909aee8e5abcced6
Thanks @jdembowski, and I definitely see how pasting a log that way could be problematic.
@pbchambers26, https://gist.github.com/ is a great way to send the log but the gist you linked seems to be scripts and styling, that’s not exactly what we’re looking for.
When you navigate to?Total Upkeep > Tools > Logs?and find for your most recent log (It will have a name like?
archive-XXXXXXXX.log
). You should click the log and only copy the log data you see there into your gist.It should look similar to this:
[2023-02-18 13:31:04 UTC] Last error: Array ( [type] => 2 [message] => mkdir(): File exists [file] => /home/sitesbyyogi/public_html/wp-content/plugins/w3-total-cache/Util_File.php [line] => 65 ) [2023-02-18 13:31:04 UTC] PHP Version: 7.4.33 [2023-02-18 13:31:04 UTC] WordPress Version: 6.1.1 [2023-02-18 13:31:04 UTC] Total Upkeep version: 1.15.5
Thank you!
I think I’ve got it now!

Sorry for the delay @pbchambers26,
There’s a good chance that your hosting provider / server may be auto killing the backup process. This usually this happens with the backup takes too long complete.
One way to test this is to perform a Sanity Check to see if a smaller sized backup will indeed process.
Performing a “Sanity Check Backup” – involves only backing up .txt files, to make sure the backup process can complete successfully. If it does complete, this helps to further indicate a possible server intervention.
In order to run the Sanity Check you’ll need to create a “custom backup” and in the includes section For “Files & Folders” enter *.txt. Also exclude all database tables from your backup.
After your backup completes visit your logs section to verify that it did. This sanity check will let us know if this issue is with your backup itself or if there’s something going on outside of that like with your server or hosting resource limits.
Thanks @pbchambers26!

Hi @pbchambers26! We haven’t heard from you in about a week so we’re hoping you may have come to a resolution on this. I’m going to mark the thread as resolved but don’t hesitate to reach back out if you still need help with anything.
Thank you!
