• I’m not the only one who’s had a bad experience with Bluehost. I’ve blogged about it here: https://agabus.com/?p=432

The question is, why does WordPress promote such a miserable company? Five or six times a day, my sites simply froze up. Bluehost explained that they were aware of the problem, but really couldn’t do much. That didn’t make a whole lot of sense — if it were true, hackers would freeze up the whole web.

Anyway, I think WordPress should remove them as a recommended host. After all, that’s what got me “blue” in the first place!

It’s partly because of affiliate money, I suppose (I suppose).

We’ve switched hosting companies 4 to 5 times. We only pay $94.50 or whatever a year. There is no best web hosting company for that price. You just have to know how to take care of things because not many web hosting support representatives are knowledgeable. Bluehost/HostMonster… Oh, boy… They are definitely not the best one according to my experience. I can tell you some bad stories about them. But the thing is none of them is perfect. Neither am I. It’s like teaching. I used to teach statistics to college students at Big XII school. No matter how enthusiastic you are and make efforts, there are always students who go against you. If some people say Bluehost is the best, there is always another group of people who disagree.

So my advice is stick to the current one. Whichever the web hosting company is, it won’t make much difference. We were fed up with HostMonster, so we moved to Lunarpages. Lunarpages does drive me crazy as well. Again, I can tell you really bad stories about them. In the end, the only person you can rely on is YOU. No matter how Lunarpages drives us crazy, we are unlikely to move again because switching takes too much trouble. Midphase… They did drive us crazy before as well.

I have to throw a good word in for Hostgator. I’ve moved on to a larger hosting package, but my time with Hostgator was uneventful in the main. Seemed fairly reliable. I’m with LiquidWeb now.

    You say

    >Perhaps it was the single server that got attacked

Is that at rackspace hosting? A number of musician websites are hosted there. And they were consistently hacked several months ago.

No it was hosted a midphase.

Honestly, finding a good host is really a personal thing. I’ve had good hosting companies that have either gone under or jacked up their prices to the point that I’ve had to move, and bad hosting companies that I just put up with as long as I could.

The folks I’m using now came highly reccomended on this board several years back, but searching for their name today only brought up one result. I think they’re complete idiots, but they’re cheap, and so far, nothing they’ve done has been irreversible. I’m shopping for a new host, because honestly, it’s become clear they know nothing about how WordPress works, and I have three sites sitting on their servers that all run on WP.

A bad fit for me might be a good fit for someone else.

So who is the *BEST* WordPress host?

I would define best as the following:
    1. Stable – not a lot of downtime
    2. Fast – Want WordPress to be as snappy as possible
    3. Knowledgeable about WordPress – meaning if they understand it they can optimize their environment for it.
    4. Cost – last on the list for a reason – cheaper is not better in most cases.

I’ll give a shout out to Binasys in the UK.
