• The following setting is supposed to stop any results from appearing from searches of words in the list. We have a long list of offensive words added. Yet when I search for one of them it still generates results. Anyone else have this problem. I’m mainly trying to stop spam searches from online casinos.

“Stop query on banned words filter?Modified from default setting

When activated, this option will return no results if the search query includes any of the words in the box above. If you have seamless mode off, Better Search will display an error message. With seamless mode on, this will give a Nothing found message. You can customize it by editing your theme.”

    Hi,

Sorry for the delayed response. Is this still an issue? I’m unsure why you are facing that problem in terms of the banned words filter.

Yes, it is. I can type in any of the words in the banned list and I get results for whatever posts might have it or something like it apparently.

You can try it if you go on https://routinelynomadic.com and try any of the usual obscene words or something like casino, blackjack, etc. Those words are on our site but I am hoping if I can block results it will make their spam searches useless. Theoretically.

understood and can you please give me a screenshot of the banned settings in the plugins page so I can see if I can reproduce this.

the way the plugin is supposed to work is filter out or completely stop the query ie it will give no results at all which clearly isn’t working on your site.

It may be unrelated… but we have an issue where excluded post IDs are also showing up in the search results (perhaps the filtering of the results isn’t working?)… I will add a separate post for my issue but thought I would add this here too in case it is useful.

Let me do some double-checking. Do you notice this only in seamless mode on or only off or both?

We have always had seamless integration on, it never occurred to me that would be a problem.

Thanks. I’m going to try to do some tests at my end. And, hopefully find a solution.

I tried to replicate this and I think in seamless mode, because of the way I coded it, the plugin sits when there is a banned word and the WP search takes over. I need to look into this as it definitely isn’t intended behaviour.

I’ve filed a bug report that I’ll look to fix in the next version: https://github.com/WebberZone/better-search/issues/105

Great, thanks for looking into this. Hopefully you can get it sorted out.
