Bash my blog!

  • Just submitting my site for review. Here it is.

    I’m working thru the XHTML errors so the thing will validate. The CSS is fine, as near as I can tell. The collapsible lists in the sidebar were done with some Javascript by the JS Toggle Boxes plugin. The theme is fDawn, with some modifications of my own, natch.

    One specific question I have: What should I have in the sidebar of individual post pages? I know it should probably be fewer options than appear on the front page, but I’m having a tough time narrowing it down.

    Any suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks!

    William: I know. As I said, I’m working through the validation errors.

    Hahaha, good catch whooami lol! I didn’t even really get to see those, cause I didn’t let it fully load. All those dang pictures on there, don’t help the load time for me, on a crappy dialup.

    Ya might wanna take some of those huge pictures off too, not everyone out there has an awesome fast speed connection lol!

    matt :: philisophically I’ve always wondered about the AJAX sidebar items. I think (and this is just mho) that people wouldn’t notice the content of those unless they were already expanded. I know it sounds stupid, but people don’t like to click more than they have to… not even once.

    I dig XMLHTTPRequest()s, don’t get me wrong… but for their relative lightweight content compared with the rest of the your index page I’d expand them out by default.

    Yeah, I’ve thought about that too, WarAxe. The thing is, though, the items are pretty long: 16 archive items, 41 categories and maybe 70 blogroll entries.

    It’s a tradeoff, I know. I guess I have faith in my readers. After all, if they’re reading my blog, they gotta be pretty smart. ??

    William, that’s neither here nor there. The OP has already said he’s working through them. The validator is a tool; it’s not a seal of approval. That said, some of the errors are worth addressing.

    A possible trade-off could be to show a condensed list and expand to show the full list. I’d also be tempted to make the section titles clickable and not just the +/- link.

    The right answer is whatever you like;-) I’d remove all the non-post related items; out of your list, that would leave just the site navigation items.

    phu, you’re right. There’s no AJAX on the page. I didn’t check the source… I just assumed. ??

    However, if I’m talking about XMLHTTPRequest() you should know that I realize Javascript doesn’t necessarily equal AJAX.

    But, you are a moderator so perhaps I better just let you wack on me…

    I’d love to do that, but I have no idea how. There doesn’t appear to be any way to do it with the JS Toggle Boxes plugin. At least, not that I’m aware of.
