I have recently started receiving the following error:
Basic Google Maps Placemarks error: Generic AJAX failure.

Running the latest version of WordPress and BGMP. I cant remember when this exactly started happening as there have been a few updates released recently. The admin interface to BGMP works fine.

    Hi thetaylor,

I checked out the link you gave and it looks like the map loads fine, but then the server generates a "500 Internal Server Error" when trying to load the placemarks, so the plugin kills the map and displays the error message.

Can you copy/paste the relevant lines from your Apache error log? You can ask your web host for help finding it if you don’t know how. Also, ask them if they have the mod_security module for Apache installed, as that can sometimes cause problems too.

It could also be that there’s a problem with one of the individual markers, so you can try setting them all to drafts and then turning them on one-by-one in order to pinpoint which one is causing the problem.

I realized recently that the AJAX that’s used to retrieve the placemarks isn’t really necessary anyway, so I’m going to be taking it out in the next version, which should solve this problem. In the mean time, you could also try downgrading to version 1.1 until the next release comes out.

    Hi Ian

I set all of the placemarks as draft and the map loads. As soon as any mark is placed I get the error.

There is nothing in the server log apart from some errors in June from the gallery plugin I use.

hmm, are you sure you’re looking at the Apache error log and not the PHP one? Apache is definitely generating errors, so it should be logging them.

Since it worked previously, you might want to try and earlier version of the plugin, or just wait 1-2 weeks for the next release, which wont have the AJAX that’s causing the error.

I am getting this error too. Our server has mod_security installed – will the next version mentioned here run on a server with mod_security?

    Thanks!

Hi Robert, I’m going to be reworking the JavaScript in the next major release, so that should fix it.

Hey guys, I just released 1.3 and this should be fixed now. Can you try upgrading and let me know if it works or not?

    That’s fixed, good work.

I’m running into this error running version 1.4, with WP 3.2.1. I have the Horizon theme loaded with 3 widgets running on GoDaddy hosting. Any help getting it running would be great!

acamp1968, that error was removed in 1.3, so you shouldn’t be getting it at all. Did you upgrade to 1.4 from an earlier version, or install it from scratch? If you upgraded, I would try deleting the entire basic-google-maps-placemarks directory and re-uploading a fresh copy of 1.4.

I started with a fresh copy of 1.4. I’ve deleted all and reinstalled as well. Thanks for the reply.
