Basing a custom post type on an existing template

I’m using a theme that has a number of existing templates. Default, for example, is a basic posts template that is style in the blog format for the theme. There is a Full Width Template that gives you a full blank page to play with. I wanted to create a new custom post type and then build content, but Types seems to create a new post type based on the default, which in my theme is already styled. I wanted a new custom post type based on the Full Width template, but I can’t see how I can do that. Can anyone give me a few clues? Thanks.
