basket/cart overlapping main page?

i am having a issue with our checkout and basket bit. when a product is added to the basket/cart the full basket drop down overlaps completely the news sidebar etc whereever you are on the site which looks confusing, messy and not great as well as getting in the way of various buttons.

is it possible to fix this so that it either dose not overlap at all or is a optional dropdown or just something that looks better.
