• I am a bit confused on hw to set up a variable product. If I follow Woocommerce’s docs, I set up a “main” product and then set up the variations. If I have a pillow in three colors, I will end up with the main productt and then 3 variations. Or am I supposed to set up a yelloww pillow and then set up two more variations?

  • You would set up a pillow product without a colour, so this isn’t specified enough on its own and therefore you won’t see it. Then in the Product Data > Attribute tab you would set up your 3 colours: red, blue, yellow, then in the Variations tab you would “create variations from all attributes” thus making 3 completely specified products.

    Hello,
yes, thank you, taht’s what I had done, but i was wondering what are you suoopsed to enter for example for SKU for the yellow pillow(without variation)? Because you would enter all the product details for each variation, but there are still fields like SKU for the “main” product…

I think which SKU field you use would depend on how you want to manage your stock. You have a choice whether to manage stock at product level, in which case the SKU on the Inventory tab would be used and every variation would have that same SKU, or you can manage stock at variation level in which case every variation needs a unique SKU and the “main” SKU is not much use.

Ah, I see. So if I have a pillow in yellow, red and blue I would only set a picture for each variation, but not use the main product image, correct?

I think the product image would show if you don’t set a default variation. Even if you set a default variation, the user may be able to select “Any” in which case the product image would show.

For some products, all variations may look the same, so there would be no need to set a variation image.

The product image is necessary for the shop page which shows the list of products.

Some themes may do things a bit differently.
