• Hello.

I can’t specifically find the answer I’m looking for on these forums and I can’t really believe I’m the only one who has experienced this problem, and so – here goes.

I’ve had WP since 2.4-ish. Love it. I’ve been using it a lot lately because 3.0 really excites me. My blog has been at https://www.mydomain.com/blog since the beginning. Last night, I decided to set up multisite functionality. I decided on the subdirectory route because I thought it best matches my current style of https://www.mydomain.com/blog .

The problem is, I got everything working and such, but now all of my posts are actually found at https://www.mydomain.com/blog/blog/~permalink-structure

Which means that all of my work is 404ing when coming in from Google. OK, well, it’s likely only me hitting the site, but … still.

Based on what I have read after this tragedy has occurred, it appears like I need to do a few things.

    1.) Backup everything (again)
    2.) Export the existing blog
    3.) Uninstall WordPress at https://www.mydomain.com/blog
    4.) Re-install WordPress at https://www.mydomain.com

Then … will I be able to import all of my work, and get my blog to be pulled up at https://www.mydomain.com/blog and my new multisite blogs to come up at https://www.mydomain.com/somethingnew ?

Any tips on how to accomplish this?

Because … heh, looks like I dug me a pretty big hole here, I just want to ensure I’m digging the right way to get out.

Thanks for everyone’s help on these forums!

Yes, that will work, except. You’re going to have to scour the database for all instances of https://www.mydomain.com/blog and change that. Which is a PITA, but that’s how it goes :/

FWIW, the default blog folder is ‘blog’ so your primary site with subfolders will be ‘domain.com/blog/permalinks’ for blog posts (pages would be domain.com/pagename).

Thanks, ipstenu. Anything else I should keep in mind? Anyone?

… or remove the /blog/ from the permalinks….

How do I alter the permalinks? Is that via the database scour/dump?

@andrea_r, I thought of that, but it won’t address this part:

my new multisite blogs to come up at https://www.mydomain.com/somethingnew ?

Which we know doesn’t work that way ??

Yes and no. Don’t worry (yet) about removing blog from your FUTURE URLs! Since your blog has been at domain.com/blog, it actually will be fine to leave it as is.

You have to edit wp_site and wp_sitemeta. In wp_site you want to remove the path setting (it should say domain is domain.com and path is /blog right now, remove blog and just have it be a / )

In wp_sitemeta there are settings for siteurl, which also have your domain like https://domain.com/blog – You want to change those too.

I THOUGHT you could do this all via the edit sites GUI, but mine are greyed out for some reason.

Thanks. I’ll be doing this in a day or so when I have more time and will report if it blows up in my face. But I’m pretty sure – based on the help found here – that I know what I’m doing now.
