best chmod settings

Could someone please give me a definitive answer for the best chmod settings. There are a number of topics that people have raised but opinions seem to vary.

My setup:

I need to setup chmod for my client’s WP site which I’m using as a CMS. I am administrator therefore need overall access and ability to change anything and everything. My client is editor therefore needs access to certain parts of the site and make changes. The public are not allowed to access the admin at all.

This has suddenly become important as my client reported an error when he tried to upload a image. It seems the ‘upload’ directory needed chmod settings changed. I did that but it still didn’t work. Eventually I changed to misc settings in WP to disable uploads by date and it WORKED! I’ve no idea what that awas about, but I understand that this is a security issue.

Which brings me back to the question… The best chmod settings.
