Best permission for upload folder?

Hopefully this is the right section for questions such as this, if not, I do apologize. However, I’d like some advice from those with more experience than myself with using WordPress.

The question is – what’s the best permission set to use for the upload folder? I’ve tried 755, but then i’m not allowed to upload anything… so, I’ve still got it running at 777..

Any advice is appreciated.
