• Currently, I create a sub-domain on my hosted server for each of my clients (client1.mydomain.com).

Then when the development is complete, I use backup buddy to migrate the site from the dev server to the production hosted server.

Is this the best practice for maintaining a development environment ?

    Thank you.

  • Hi roytucker,

It sounds like a sensible approach.

More to the point seem the answers to the following questions:

    1. does this approach get the job done?
    2. are your clients happy?
    3. are you / your co-workers happy with it?
    4. what would you change if you could / knew how?
    5. what are the downsides to this way of working?

The alternative I can come up with, that is slightly less work, is instead of creating a subdomain, is to create a subfolder in the main domain. If need be I can use .htaccess to regulate access to the folder thru limiting certain IP-addresses.
    ‘potatoes vs spuds, really.’
