No, any format is fine.

Using just wordpress vanilla not a lot of plug-ins.

Perhaps one of my plugins would be suitable for you: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/download-list-block-with-icons/ – you could use it to create a list per year, for example, and then sort the list automatically using the file name sorting. All you have to do is go to the editor and click it together.

An alternative would probably be: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/download-manager/ – although I’m not sure if and how you can sort there.
