    Hi,

    I currently have a site up and running – however;
    – I wish to create a new site to eventually replace my current site
    – I wish for my current site to stay active, while developing the new site

My site is currently on an URL: https://www.mysite.dk .

I also have 2 other domains with the same webhost on:
    1) https://www.mysite.SE
    2) https://www.mysite.COM

My question: I wish to keep my current site up and running, while developing the site that is eventually going to replace it – however, how do I best do this (thinking ahead of having to move the site to the main-domain, and replace the existing site)?

    – Do I use “addon domain”?
    – Do I use “sub domain” (such as https://www.test.mysite.dk)?
    – Do I simply use either the .COM or .SE domain to build the new site?

I know from experience, that it can be quite the task, to replace a running site, with a newly developed site – but I am unsure of which of the options, gives me the “easiest” way out, when I am to move the new site to https://www.mysite.dk and replace the current site that exists there.

  • Dear lasseustrup,

Personally I would create a test environment on the subdomain of your current ‘main’ site or ask your current hoster to make a new test environment for you to build your new website on.

Whenever you finish development you should move it to the ‘main’ domain.
Just make sure that you think about the way you build up your links, categories etcetera and use redirections from your old site URL’s to the new site URL’s. Take enough time to plan it and test it thoroughly and once you go live carefully monitor 404’s etecetera so you can quickly step in and fix things you might have overlooked.

Good luck! If this post helped fix your issue, please mark this topic as resolved.

Thank you – I think I will go ahead with a subdomain as you mentioned. I’ve been looking at the Velvet Blues URL updating plugin, to solve the URL mess that may arise.

As I do not have many categories and such (simple webshop with some text, and a single product) I have marked this as completed ??

    Thank you!

    Dear lasseustrup,

You are very welcome. Just take time to test it thoroughly and if possible ask a friend / colleague to click through your website and report unexpected behavior to you.

Furthermore I think you should make sure that your test-environment is not indexed by search engines and maybe password-protected to prevent others from visiting it without your permission / without being live.

    Good luck!

    Kind regards,
