Best Practices: Site Development Methodology and Migration Strategy

We are considering using WP instead of Expression Engine for a corporate site, but we have a lot of developers and use a development/staging/deployment system. Judging by the state of the documentation and various plugins, it seems this isn’t a methodology followed that often, nor supported that well by the code base.

Anyone have some good suggestions? Anyone currently using this approach that can offer some advice?
