I have installed the latest 4.1.7 update and it seems to be working well. I noticed the new “Links per page” setting under the Further options section. I don’t recall what the default was before in the old versions?? I am wondering what is the best SEO recommendation for the number of links per page.

My site has nearly 40,000 posts published over a decade of time. If it’s set to 10 links per page (the default) the main sitemap.xml is almost 1MB in size because the main page has so many links. I’ve changed the links per page to 40 for now and it has made the main sitemap.xml much smaller, but I am wondering what the best setting is for a site like mine to make sure SEO is at its best? Does Google read 10 links per page or 100 links per page better? What do you recommend?

  • Hi @buddha1822, thanks for the feedback. Settings 100 links per page with a sitemap as giant as yours would be fine. Google recommends any sitemap have less than 50K URLs and an uncompressed size of up to 50 MB. So right now you can extend up to 100 links or else keep 40 links as it is.

Thank you for the fast response. I am thinking that the original sitemap file size being so large is not a good idea. But I don’t know what the best practice is for SEO and for best performance of the site. But if you recommend 100 per page, this might be what I will try and see what happens.

Hi @buddha1822 – yes, Google recommends the sitemap index size to be less than 50 MB, so you can try with 100 links per page and let me know the results back. Thanks.
