Best way to build a niche social network site?

Hi folks. I’m building a niche social networking website with WP. People have been recommending BuddyPress as the plugin to achieve this. However, I’m encountering a number of problems, and I’m wondering if there are any good alternatives to BuddyPress.

Specifically, the most important thing is that people can make their own profiles. These profiles will present text, a couple of pictures and a couple of embedded videos. Forums are not required, but I do want members to be able to message each other.

Any suggestions?
