Best way to customize forum static page. Width sidebar

  • Looking to customize the forum width and position as well as add a custom sidebar. I created a child theme, my question is should I customize everything within the childtheme with a new sidebar php template and then call for it in my ccs? Or should I somehow use wordpress to format this page how I want it and use a widget on the sidebar some how?

    the main content would be the simplepress forum right, so if I need to change its width I would use the code for maincontent
