• I keep my wordpress under subversion control, the way wordpress performs plugin updates makes that unncesarily painful – it deletes the entire directory and unpacks the new zip file – in the process zapping .svn files and anything else.

It would IMO be far better for WP to keep an inventory file list of the plugin at installation and then only remove files that are not in the new upgraded package, preserving revision control. It would also mean that plugins could keep their own configuration files and any other customisation files without them being whacked at upgrade time…

  • You could update your plugins using subversion too.

I’m not sure I follow… I use subversion to revision control my site, not as a way to conveniently grab updates from external sources.

I could set various plugin directories to be external, but that wouldn’t help if I make local bugfixes etc.
