Better WP Security – Internal Error

    (I hope I’m posting in the right place)

    I’ve installed the “Better WP Security” plug-in and went through the settings. I checked the box saying “Ban IP and Hosts” (I think it’s called) and then everything crashed. I cant enter the site anymore- this message appears when trying to enter the site:

    “Internal Server Error

    The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

    Please contact the server administrator, [email protected] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

    More information about this error may be available in the server error log.”

    Any suggestions to what I can do? I did back up everything via FTP, but I dont want to delete everything on my site before other options are explored, because I’ve done this before and my site was not as it were before when uploading all files again.

    I also pressed the backup-button in the plug-in, and received a little zip-file on e-mail. Dont know how to use this file to restore everything anyway.

    Using an FTP client go to the .htaccess file at root and remove this …

    Hi Len.

    You sure know your stuff. That did it for me. Thanks a million. ??

    The plug-in is still there and the box I checked that made it all crash is still checked. Any ideas how to go from here? Should I uncheck the “Ban Users” box? Is there anything I need to know about removing the text you suggested?

    Honestly, I wouldn’t bother with blocking IPs since most people have dynamic IPs anyway. Additionally, if someone really wants to access your site they’ll do so through a proxy. If you’re going to start banning those you could end up with a list of thousands of IPs which will slow your site down to a crawl. (if not crash it)

    That was my thought too before I checked it. How many are using static IP’s when trying to hack a site… ?? Well, I’n not touching that again anytime soon.
    Everything is working now (but for how long- I’m still doing the settings in the plug-in) and hopefully it wont crash again. ??
