Hello, thank you for the great plugin. I am running an SMS advertising campaign. When I create a bit.ly link on a mobile phone and send it via SMS, the link doesn’t appear as a referrer in the statistics when users click it to access the website. Is there a way to track this separately?

    Hi @wpnoobzz,

Thank you for opening the thread!

Bitly links do not typically pass on a “Referrer” header; therefore, it’s not possible to track the referrers as there is no data to record.

You can use query parameters in the url you shorten with bitly, like https://site.com/?utm_campaign=sms-campaign, and track these parameters instead.

Please visit the following guids to learn more about the URL Query Parameters in WP Statistics:

Hello, thank you for your response. I’m not the one running the text advertisements; some customers are sending bulk messages using bitly.com on sub-sites of the multisite without permission, which keeps causing our hosting to go down. Therefore, I intend to detect which sites are using bitly and stop those sites.

As you mentioned, when I checked the links in the texts using Safari on my iPhone and Google Chrome, the referrer is empty and is registered as direct.

I have a question regarding this. The card company is sending messages on behalf of customers using the website URL provided by them via bitly, so we do not have access to the bitly account itself.

In that case, regarding the UTM URL building you mentioned, such as https://site.com/?utm_campaign=sms-campaign, I have created it using a WordPress plugin like Easy UTM Builder, but how can I create something like sms-campaign to detect it?

    I would appreciate your help.

    Hi @wpnoobzz,

WP Statistics is an analytics tool for WordPress websites that tracks visitors and provides insights on page visits, referrers, and more.

Unfortunately, our plugin cannot detect which user is creating Bitly links, as this is beyond its intended functionality.

Regarding UTM campaigns, please note that when someone visits your site via a URL like https://your-site.com/?utm_campaign=XXXXX, WP Statistics will record the visit, and you can view how many visitors have come to your site through that campaign.

Please note that defining these campaigns and the keywords you use depends entirely on your marketing strategies. WP Statistics simply provides the analytical insights.

    Regards
