WordPress 5.1.1 running Twenty Fifteen theme
    Some of my plugins:
    Classic Editor Plugin
    WP-Optimize Plugin
    Easy Updates Manager

I’ve got 2 WP Sites, with almost identical settings and plugins. One site is only a couple of months old. My sites have Posts and the usual Pages, like Privacy Policy, Disclaimer, Contact.

Today I noticed that when I want to edit a page, the page is empty in Edit Mode, both in Text and in Visual. Word Count: 0. My Pages are displayed OK on the Front Side. Only the Contact Page (Contact Form 7) is OK in Edit Mode. The Posts are OK too.

I’ve seen that this problem has been reported several times but I can’t find a solution. Most topics are closed without a clear answer or feedback.

When I inspect the database the post_content field of the affected pages are empty, except the post_content field of the Contact page. But since the pages are displayed OK, I guess there should be database fields with content elsewhere in the database? I’ve tried these solutions, but no luck:

    – I’ve tried several Browsers
    – I’ve disabled all Plugins
    – I do not have an Adblocker Plugin (in my browsers)
    – I’ve tried switching themes

I’m thinking about two possible causes:
    – I’m using the WP-Optimize plugin to clean the database. This plugin has 800.000+ downloads, so it should be safe to use?
    – I’ve moved my sites manually to SSL, without using a plugin.

Thanks in advance for any help!

  • What theme are you using?

You might want to try debugging using the Health Check plugin and while in debug mode see if the page(s) are still blank. If the content reappears in debug mode then you have a plugin that is conflicting with your theme and causing the issue.

Thanks, looks like a nice and useful plugin, but it dit not solve the problem. My pages are still empty in Edit Mode.

Are you using classic editor or Gutenberg…

Edit: nevermind. Looked back at original post.

I’ve never seen this… And can’t duplicate it on any of my sites. Not sure what it could be myself

I found the root of the problem. I apparently created the Legal Pages from within the Wp-Insert plugin (20,000+ active installations). Once created, they look like normal pages. However, you can only edit them from within the plugin. Otherwise they turn up blank with word count: 0, even if the plugin is disabled

If this is the intended behavior of this plugin, it would be better to give users some kind of warning or error message.

    Case closed for now.

@dotch : Its the intended behavior of the plugin. If the plugin adds its content into the post editor it loses control over the content (What if the user has modified the content in the editor, etc) and the plugin can no longer proactively provide you dynamic content (example : Give Adsense specific policy snippets when you start using Adsense ads, VI specific lines for VI users etc). This is the reason the content is edited from within the plugin admin page.

OK, thanks for the feedback. Everything is up and running, including your plugin, which is very useful.
