    Hi,

Yesterday I installed Updraft (free version) for the first time on a client’s website I am working on at https://knebworthprimaryschool.org.uk/

    I made a backup.

Very shortly after this the site’s images stopped loading. I assumed I had made a mistake somewhere, so I restored the backup I had just made.

Now nothing works at all on the front-end or back-end.

    Things I have tried:
    – renamed .htaccess
    – enabled error logs
    – disabled updraft plugin via ftp
    – disabled all plugins via ftp
    – restored an even older back up of all files manually via ftp
    – disabled the theme (it’s a custom theme) and switched to twenty fourteen via ftp
    – memory limit is at 512MB

I’m at a loss now, and I am asking for the web host info from my client; in the meantime I thought I would ask on here to see if you have any ideas?

    Hi,

Given what you have tried already, the problem is very unlikely to do with the plugin.

To be sure, and to check that your backup is complete, you could try importing it into a test site. You may need to go through some steps in the Moving WordPress tutorial to get it working.

    Good luck

    Hi,

Can you post the restoration log? (It’s in wp-content/updraft). That’ll give information on how the restoration meant.

As DNutbourne says, it sounds like the problem is somewhere else – for all those things to be having no effect, the brokenness must be caused by something that remains the same even after you’ve done all those things. e.g. Perhaps you introduced a typo in wp-config.php, or something like that? UpdraftPlus doesn’t have any hooks into the front end of websites (it only needs to be on the backend to do its stuff), and no plugin that’s disabled gets to run (WP never invokes it if it’s not activated). Have you tried turning on WP_DEBUG in your wp-config.php?

The fact that images stopped working suggests something else is going on that needs identifying – only a web hosting issue, or breaking something in .htaccess, could cause this; a plugin couldn’t even intercept the request to the image in order to adjust it, even if it really wanted to.

If WP_DEBUG doesn’t help show the error, then you’ll want to read the PHP error log.

Finally – we sell “we’ll fix it” support packages at https://updraftplus.com/shop/get-support/, which have a 100% refund guarantee if the problem turns out to be a defect in UpdraftPlus.

    Hi,

Thanks. There’s a defect in the database backup. If you send the database backup (the db.gz file) through to [email protected], then I can fix it and send it you back. Then you can import the new database backup in phpMyAdmin (UD database backups are compatible), or whatever tool your web hosting company provides access to (or if none, upload adminer via FTP).

This won’t fix your missing images issue, as that’s something else (as I say, a plugin couldn’t even get involved in that if it wanted to, unless it deliberately rewrote the .htaccess file; which UD has no need to touch).

    Thanks guys.

WP-Config – I have tried a couple of backups of this so i’m sure there are no typos.

WP_DEBUG – Is turned on, but the last error that is showing in the log is from October.

I will check with the host and see if I can get access to the PHP error log. I’ll also try the test site import.

Is there anything that could have gone wrong with the MySQL database ?

    Hi,

    Thanks – I received it.

In fact, it is not corrupt. I was thinking it was corrupt because of this in your log:

0000.375 () An error (1) occurred: Duplicate entry ‘uninstall_plugins’ for key ‘option_name’ – SQL query was:

This indicates that UD tried to insert something into the database that was already there. However, the database doesn’t contain a duplicate entry, and I’ve successfully restored it on UpdraftPlus on a test system.

So, that’s very bizarre. The only other thing I can think of is that somehow you were running two restores at the same time. But then, two log files would be expected – and you don’t have that (and I’m sure it’s not even possible; UD locks the “Restore” button before sending off the request to begin the restore, to prevent multiple-clicks; and furthermore, it’s locked on the back-end too). One other idea: the database server had a corruption problem.

Anyway… regardless of the problem, you should be able to fix your issue by importing the database dump via phpMyAdmin. That will then get your database back to a fixed state.

If your site front-end doesn’t load after that, it would probably be because of missing plugins. You can use phpMyAdmin to empty the ‘active_plugins’ option in your options table – though, an admin login to WP may work.

    Hi David,

I got the db backup restored but there appears to be no change.

Do you think it could be anything else to do with the plugin or could it be a memory leak or something else?

    Hi,

If you share the whole backup set with me, then I can test it out. e.g. via a Dropbox or Google Drive link (send to [email protected]).

    Hi,

I received the backup set via Dropbox – thank you.

I restored it with no problems on a test WordPress installation. All was then working. A couple of screenshots:

So, I’d suggest moving your existing WP install out of the way, making a fresh WP install, installing UpdraftPlus, uploading this backup set, and restoring it. Something in your existing WP install must be broken, but rather than find out exactly what, you should be able to start afresh and restore from the backup set that way.

    Best wishes,

    Hi David,

I have tried a number of times to make a fresh install of WP. But it seems the problem may go further than that.

I wiped the database and all the files, uploaded a new install and then went through the install process. Whenever I try to setup wp-config.php (either with the install guide or manually) I hit the “blank screen of death” stright after.

Clearly it is something I need to go to the web host with, but do you have any idea what could have gone wrong? Or is this completely outside the scope of Updraft?

    Many thanks,

    Fred

So, the WordPress installer works, up until the point when it writes wp-config.php and then it stops after that?

That’s puzzling. Nothing springs to mind – unless either there’s something in an .htaccess file that’s interfering, or the wp-config.php file is being written with insufficient file permissions to be read (but that explanation doesn’t make sense if WP itself is writing it; if it can write it, it must be able to read it).

I think you’ll have to ask your hosting company for guidance as to the cause of the error. As I say, the backup set itself is fine and I was able to restore from it without any issues. Also – do they not have a 1-click WordPress installer in their control panel? That’s often the quickest way of setting WP up.

I’ve tried different file permissions – no change.

I don’t think they do have a 1-click installer in this case.

Thanks for your help David. I will get on to them. I will update this post with the final outcome.

For now I have taken this to my own server to work on and the backup was fine.

If I find out that it was anything to with Updraft I will update this thread.

But for now I will mark this as resolved.

Thank you for your help David.
