Blog by Email – managing images

To the best of my knowledge, the short answer is “nope.”

The Blog_by_Email feature is pretty text only. Now, if you uploaded the images ahead of time and include the proper (x)HTML markup in the emailed post you could probably pull it off… but I imagine that’s not all that useful.

If the idea is to be able to do a bit of offline blogging, have you considered any of the Weblog_Clients?

Cool, I’ll try that out. thanks- do you know if attachments work with any of these?

*edit- at the same time one of the things im trying to accomplish is uploading photo galleries(multiple photos) from cell-phones. I’ll keep looking though

I, personally, have had great luck with Windows Live Writer (beta) and image attachments. Valid markup and all.

Others, however, have reported challenges.

I haven’t used too many others, to be honest… Perhaps some other folks will pipe up.

AFAIK, WLW isn’t usable mobile yet. It’s still beta, so maybe before “release”? Other than that, it’s an EXCELLENT client (regardless it’s a MS product….) – practically pristinely valid code and so simple to use it’s almost impossible to believe.

I had an idea that I might be able to modify the Postie plugin in a way that it would work the same as the functions inside wordpress as far as posting attachments.
Right now I’m hunting through the code in admin-functions.php and inline-uploading.php to try and find where the funtions for uploading images and attachments are so I can copy them to the postie plugin somehow…this might be too hard but I’ll try it

By the way, if anyone knows anything about the functions that are used to post attachments in wordpress, or XMLRPC or getting email or anything like that- any kicks in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

ok… so I am having this issue as well. when I post a pic via email by phone and let the cronjob handle it, everything comes out garbled. BUT… if I post a pic via email by phone and I manually run postie, everything is fine.

there is a thumbnail of the picture in the post and when you click on it, the full-size pic loads.

just as it should.

what is the postie cron job doing to the posting that manually running postie does not do?

Email Format

WordPress will use the Subject line of your email for the title of the post, and all body of the email will be used as the content of the post, with common HTML tags stripped. WordPress will file the post under whichever category is selected for “Usual Category” in Step 1, and will use Site Admin as the poster.

I’ll try, I consider then than you cannot post an image by email du wordpress.

Once upon a time (WP 1.5?) I tried posting an image via e-mail, and, as I recall it worked like a charm.

Now, when I read the codex page and saw “images and attachments will be posted inline,” I understood “inline” to mean the images would appear in the message (and I guess I was hoping for a link to attachments).

But nope. It seems, as reported above, that the encoded data is dumped into the message.

So I’d suggest a minor tweak to clarify the codex page for those like me for whom “inline” isn’t immediately (or even now, completely) understood.

Am I hallucinating that this used to work? Is there any movement towards a plugin on this? Or *should* I be able to get pictures pulled from the e-mail to appear in the blog post?

It doesn’t look like anyone’s asked for this feature in the Ideas section.

[My problem isn’t offline blogging but how to get info from an e-mail list into the blog easily. Preserving formatting would be nice. But this is probably a separate thread.]

To re-define what I’m doing:

I am now using postie to Blog by email but also sending image attachments. Postie automatically adds the image to the post. However, what I am trying to do is make the image a seperate entity. I want to be able to post just the image URL in the loop by itself. Is there anyway of doing this?

It seems like there would be – and that it would be simpler than what postie is already doing, which is adding the photo to the html of the post.

Any help?

Here’s another thing Im working on – I want postie (or maybe WordPress?) to auto create thumbnails of each image uploaded by postie like WordPress does for you when you upload images.

Does anybody have even a small idea that might help?

I am getting rather frustrated. I thought in this day and age blogging by email (or mobile email) would be pretty much standard. It seems not.

I am using WP2.2 and didn’t have any luck with their built in ‘blog by email’ so I have configured postie instead. My emails are delivered and posted, but images or HTML are not displayed correctly.

I have tried with the https://www.economysizegeek.com/wp-mail/#comment-46185 postie1.1.1zip and also with the https://ragingliberal.com/?p=784 postie-functions.php fix. But with no change.

When I try to run the postie ‘test config’ I get:
Sorry only admin can run this file

When I try to reset postie ‘configs to default’ I get the following error:
