First, let me apologize. I’m sure 15 hundred thousand million trillion people have already asked this question… I DID search for my answer on these forums but all I kept reading is that you can’t do it on wordpress.com. This isn’t a wordpress.com blog, it’s self hosted, and well, I just gave up and decided to become 15 hundred thousand million trillion and one (my kids taught me to count).

I’m not afraid of HTML but PHP scares me to death. I have no earthly idea where to put the HTML code for Blog Catalog, and I’m too chicken to experiment… On that note, should I add the badge? Will it help my blog? Any opinions? I’m just trying to spread the word, and I stumbled on Blog Catalog while doing some google-ing.

I’m assuming I go to Dashboard, then Appearance, then Editor, but then what? Main Index Template? Page Template?

    Here’s my masterpiece: https://www.usmc101.com

Any help much appreciated. MUCH. ??

You could put the badge code in a text widget. Go into Appearance > Widgets. Drag a text widget into one of the two sidebars (right or left). Copy/paste the code provided by Blog Catalog.

No harm done – if you don’t like how it looks, just delete the widget.

As to the value of it, that’s another story. What do they give you in return? ?? It’s basically free advertising for them, but that’s the price you pay for a free listing (I haven’t researched it) you could see how much traffic it brings you and decide whether to keep it. A personal decision, really.

Zoonini, that’s exactly why I was asking… In order to get listed in their directory you have to add their “badge/widget/whatever” to your blog. I figure for it’s humble beginning, why not? I can always remove it later, like you said, if it doesn’t bring much traffic. Right now anything I can do to get even a little traffic is better than what I’ve got now, which is essentially, nothing.

Going right now to see if I can figure out how to add that thing as a widget. Thanks. Oh and one more thing, is it possible to add the code directly, instead of using the widget functions? would that be a better way to do it? I’m used to doing things the hard way!

You can certainly hard-code the badge code into one of your sidebar theme files (right or left), but you risk breaking your theme if you’re not super confident editing code. Putting the HTML in a text widget is IMO much easier and will allow you to remove it quickly and simply. I don’t see a downside to doing it that way. Let me know how it goes!

You may actually have to use a PHP widget rather than a text widget.

Jonas Grumby – Blog badge code is usually a simple link wrapped around an image – that should be fine in a text widget, which accepts HTML perfectly well.

Why do you think she’ll need a PHP widget?

Hey Zoonini, it worked! WooHoo! Thank you so much!

    Fantastic! Looks perfect.

Oh, ps, the one thing that really helped was this:

Go into Appearance > Widgets. Drag a text widget into one of the two sidebars (right or left). Copy/paste the code provided by Blog Catalog.

I had read a couple of answers to this same question but I needed the extra information to go to appearance and then widgets.

    THANK YOU!

Jonas, I am now officially afraid my next add on will need the PHP widget, but hey, I’ll cross that bridge when I get there! Thanks though, for your contribution.

I say she *may* need the PHP widget. I did not look at the badge code.
