• I was wondering if anyone has ever experienced issues like blog defamation or impersonation or other fraudulent behavior. If so, how did you deal w. it? Has anyone out there employed an attorney to defend themselves in similar circumstances?

I write a political blog & someone has created a blog which in part pretends to be written by me & which also defames me using pornographic language & other techniques ranging fr. sophomoric to disturbing.

  • Dear all,

Thank you for your thoughtful discussion of online defamation and impersonation. We at ReputationDefender did want to take a moment to clarify that the splogs and spam that drmike has been receiving are not actually from us. We’ve gotten some press recently, and another company has started to use our name.

    Thanks for your time,

    We’ve gotten some press recently”

That’s an understatement, see my previous reply.

    I agree with mythusmage

In my experience, reason and litigation have failed utterly with domain snatching, impersonation, and slander.

Instead, I’ve promoted the culprits and they eventually lose interest and fade away.

Best thing is to make yourself clear, proceed with what you’re doing, and believe in yourself. Giving in to antagonism is more or less the food for the fool who is mocking you. You know, like the broken, hurt, and lonely bullies in school… if you whine and cry, they snicker and get meaner. If you laugh along, and think they’re lame, they want to sleep over at your house. to which you happily say “Om my, no thank you.”

A slappy life is it’s own reward in my opinion.

Thanks to all these great replies & for yr encouragement. I’ve actually succeeded in transforming this into a positive. A NY Times reporter saw my posts about this & featured me as part of a front pg. story that dealt mostly with Kathy Sierra & the blogging code of conduct. The local news radio station did a story on me & the tech reporter for the Seattle Post Intelligencer is writing a column about this. A reporter from Computerworld also wants to write a story.

Though this imposter is a s*$t, I really should thank him as a number of you have implied. I’ve turned lemons into lemonade!

But why Blogger won’t take such crap down is beyond me. Prob. because I haven’t sicced a lawyer on ’em.

Sounds like your on your way to putting a “spin” on this. Which is your only real defense.

I think I’d make a big deal about it by basically pointing out what he’s doing based on a “I must be on to somthing to rate this kind of attention” angle.

What ever you do, take the high road. Anyone who would be on your side will be able to figure out for themselves what kind of person he/she is, you don’t have to tell them.

At that point, you’ll be “the bigger man” so to speak, and will have taken the best steps you can toward any needed “damage control” as is related to your rep/identity.

    Um…whooami?

Before you praise Reputation Defender, you might want to check them out a bit more carefully
