  • you set the posts page in settings > reading. by doing that you cancel out the setting on the page. Just leave the post page empty.

Yes, I’ve already done that. And the post page is empty.

When viewing the front end, the blog page gives me a short excerpt of all the posts (the second this above).

I want the full posts displayed, or at least to be able to use the “page break” function and to remove the sidebar (for the blog posts). At the moment it doesn’t allow me to use any of the functionality of the blog page.

    Here’s my website address: https://www.christovandeventerphotography.co.za/

Your photo is showing it isn’t empty but actually set to “blog – wedding photography”.

If you just make that select box empty by clicking the empty square at the top it will work.

Sorry, I’ve not explained my problem correctly.

I want my Front Page set to the static landing page “Gauteng and Johannesburg Wedding Photographer” and my Posts Page set to my Blog.

When a visitor clicks on my Blog Page/Tab on the home page menu, they see the second this above: a list of posts with a tiny excerpt. I’d like them to see a longer excerpt that includes at least one image. I thought using the functionality displayed in the first this above would help.

    (A) Am I misunderstanding you or not making my query clear, or (B) is my choice of Front Page and Blog page (under settings > reading) preventing me from accessing the functionality I seek?

Here is an example of what you want: https://themes.kadencethemes.com/virtue-premium/blog-full/

To do this you build a page like you did but you do not make that your post page in settings > reading.

You don’t need to set a page as your posts page. This theme doesn’t require that.

If you need me to just do it for you send me a temp login and I can.

Thanks for your patience and your offer. I’d like to learn how to do it myself. Your link took me to the premium version, which I don’t have.

Nevertheless, I’ve fiddled a little more, and have now got the full posts displayed when the Blog page is selected. Progress.

Despite adding a “page break” function to an individual post (trying with both the usual WordPress’s ‘Insert More Tag’ and Virtue’s ‘Insert Divider’ –are they supposed to do the same thing?), the full post still appears. Is this because I’m not on premium, or am I doing something wrong?

The link was just showing functionality. The free works the same way.

I looked at your site and now your blog page is showing full posts.

Which page breaks are you adding <!–nextpage–>

    not the more tag.

Yes, it’s showing full posts. As I said, progress from the title and tiny excerpt only.

I would like to add a “more tag” so that the viewer can click for the rest of the post. The <!–nextpage–> break is not as effective.

Incidentally, when I tried the <!–nextpage break–>, it worked. However, when I try <!–more–> it doesn’t. Is there another instruction that will give me this look: https://www.youngadultfiction.info/blog-articles-ya-fiction/

I don’t get it all, that link shows is an excerpt. I thought you wanted the whole post. If you want to just show some text with a photo you can do that with the excerpt settings.

Have you looked around at https://themes.kadencethemes.com/virtue/blog/

I’d like them to see a longer excerpt that includes at least one image.

Sorry if I’m not making myself clear.

At the moment, it seems my options are either (1) a tiny text excerpt or (2) the full post.

While the full post is better, I’d like a larger body of text PLUS at least one image in the excerpt. I usually do this (on other themes) using the “Insert more tag” (WordPress icon) as I demonstrated here.

On your link (https://themes.kadencethemes.com/virtue-premium/blog-full/) you’ve also got it with the “Read More” link to the full post.

I just cannot seem to get it to work on my site.

    Thank you for your patience.

On the link you just sent me (https://themes.kadencethemes.com/virtue/blog/), have a look at “Outdoor Adventure.” You’ve got an image and an excerpt, and the more tag “Continued.” How do I do that?

You need to set a featured image for your post and then set the post summery to landscape image or portrait image.

You should take a look at the theme docs.

Okay. Thank you so very much. I don’t want to waste any more of your time. I’ll fiddle around and see where it takes me.

Thank you for a great theme, easily one of the best I’ve worked with, and I’ve worked with a number helping clients with their SEO. Just a typo I noticed: “summary,” not “summery.”

    Thanks again.

Craigrkirkby, did you ever figure this out? I would also like to be able to decide how long a post excerpt is with a “Read More” link.

You can change it for your whole site by changing the number 40 on the 7th line of lib/config.php file.
