The thumbnails are really poor image quality. How can you fix this issue with the FREE version of this plugin?

When you open gallery settings you’ll find Source option where you can change value to make quality of the thumbnails fit to your requirements. Please drop the line in you’ll have some other questions.

I only have that option in the paid version – not free. At least not where I can see it. Can you guide me a bit more where I can change/find this in the free version of the plugin?

yes, in free version we have some limits for the functionality on this mode, but by default we selected options which do not affect quality of the gallery thumbnails with regular quality. In some cases with professional, high quality gallery thumbnails images could require another, more advanced modes. This modes implemented in premium gallery version for professional users.
Do you able to post here direct link to the gallery? We’ll try to check and suggest something.
Also you can post your gallery link to the our support section here: https://robosoft.co/new-ticket
