Blurry Thumbnails

I have read the forum and Googled, have also installed and run the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin, and am not getting anywhere.
The featured blog images on the homepage all show up as different heights. I tried setting the size in custom height and width but it made no difference. I gave up trying to solve this so selected “thumbnails” on the blog settings.
Not really what I want as the squares are so big, but at least it makes them all the same size. Only now the images are all blurry!
I don’t know why it is so difficult to just get featured images set properly.
Can someone help please?

I’m going back to image style “medium” until this is solved even though they are now different heights ??
