• The MyBookTable widget that rotates through book titles at refresh as well as other places where the MyBookTable covers are displayed are showing in a 1×1 ratio and cutting off the top and bottom of the image. This is particularly useless when trying to promote books which really are bought because of their covers.

Book covers are generally and 2×3 ratio, and regardless, the widget and book pages should probably display the covers I upload in their uploaded dimensions rather than cropping or otherwise changing the image displayed.

Is there a fix for this, and if so how do I apply it?

    Hi Quincy,

MyBookTable should not be cropping your book images, they should be displaying at whatever ratio you uploaded them as.

Could you let me know what version of WordPress you are running? The only report we’ve had of incorrect image cropping before was caused by an outdated version of WordPress.

I’ve been running the 4.1.1 and have been since just before this all started. I have to suspect there is a correlation, but I don’t know that for sure.

To see what’s going on, you can go to https://www.quincyallen.com and look at the books widget on the home page. Keep refreshing to view the multiple covers.

You will notice that “The Best of Penny Dread Tales” book cover renders normally and “The Resurrection of Samhain” cover renders cropped top and bottom as does “Out Through the Attic.” The latter two covers were added to the WFP site after 4.1.1 and the addition of the Book Table Add-In. The Best Of cover was added before those.

It almost looks like it’s cropping to a default square, as if it were an album cover, but that’s just a guess.

I’ve tried a number of different things to resolve this but have had no luck.

Hmmm, yes, I see that the book images on your site are the correct dimensions but they are erroneously being cropped for some reason. I’m not quite sure what might cause this, as the cropping for MyBookTable images is explicitly turned off in the code. It’s possible that another plugin on your site or your theme is forcing cropping to be turned on, this is possible to do through WordPress hooks, though it’s very bad practice.

One thing you can try is try downloading a plugin like Regenerate Thumbnails and running it, this will tell WordPress to clear out it’s cache of saved resized images and generate them all again from scratch from the originals. This has sometimes cleared up image size problems in the past. If that does not work I might try disabling your theme and other plugins and running it again, as they seem like the only things that I can think of that may be causing this.

It also could be another plugin or a theme setting that is cropping the images. Some themes use TimThumb or similar script to crop images.
