@tlkuhn: That kind of variable behaviour suggests that this is a server resource issue. It may be that the server (which I’m assuming is shared) is over-loaded. Or that one site is simply consuming all of the server’s resources at specific times – leaving all of the other sites starved of cpu cycles. Try asking your hosts about this. The more specific you can be about dates & times, the better. Also check your server logs for any errors relating to these slowdowns in case they contain details that might persuade your host to carry out a proper investigation of this.

    Thanks for your help.

I was hoping that it wasn’t going to be difficult but I guess I was wrong. All I wanted to do was update my sites but I will not do that again unless I absolutely have to. I always seems to cause more problems that it’s worth.

It’s nothing to do with the WordPress upgrade – it’s a server issue. and it’s worth bearing mind mind that, unless you keep WordPress upgraded, your site runs a very real risk of being hacked. And being hacked is a lot worse.

    Again, thanks.
