I’ve been using the free version, and it seems there is no benefit to this. The plugin needs to generate a dynamic URL to hide the download from bots. So, reports are useless because it shows all the bots downloading the PDF. And, I looked into upgrading and the documentation and it doesn’t appear to do this. And other features that I would want, like a content lock, cost a huge annual fee for just a blogger. And lately, the plugin is junking up the interface with ads and asking for reviews. Sorry, otherwise I like it.

@smkstoll – is your hosting using Apache or Nginx as a server? Are your files being uploaded through the WordPress Media uploader or are you serving these downloads from a folder outside of your WordPress install?

I’d love to learn more so we could address this through a future update. FWIW – the reports section is getting a major overhaul

Apache, but their caching system is also run by Nginx. And my files have been uploaded through the WordPress Media uploader.

@smkstoll – would you be willing to give me the chance to investigate this for you? If you could contact us here, privately: https://www.download-monitor.com/contact/ and we’ll take it from there?

The reason being I’d like us to look more into this and figure out a solution. We’re trying to (first) fix bots from being able to access any files that you’ve uploaded OR protected with Download Monitor – and it looks like, in your case, we haven’t really succeeded in doing that …

This was just a review, not a support ticket. But, I’d be happy to help if this is what you need to improve your product.

@smkstoll – that’s exactly the logic here. We want as much user input as possible so we can build a better product.
