Bringing SEO etc from .com blog…?

    I had a personal blog over on WP.com, and I’ve just moved it over to .org so I can customise it and generally improve it as a website. Sadly I’ve lost the SEO rankings that .com blog enjoyed.
    I was expecting this of course, but just wondered…is there a way to bring that SEO over to the new site? Or is there some kind of redirect I can set up on that old .com blog?
    I’m guessing not, but thought I’d ask.. ??

  • Search equity will follow your urls so as long as you have the same urls in the new site, you shouldn’t lose anything. If the urls have changed, you would have to recreate the old urls in your new hosting account (content is optional) and do 301 redirects to the new urls.
    So for example, if you had domain.com/mypage on the wp.com site, create a page with a url of “mypage” on the new site.

    The thing is, it was a wordpress.com site, as in, the url was domain.wordpress.com

    I’ve done redirects in the past with domains I/my clients have owned, but as far as I can tell, it’s not possible to own a wordpress.com domain or have the ability to put a redirect on it – is that right?

    Hmm, now I’m thinking I should have asked this over at .com support, sorry!

    I assumed it was using your own domain. I’m not sure how flexible .com is regarding redirects. But asking there is the right option.

    Quick update on this – WP.com offer a paid-for redirect. It’s in the ‘store’ area of the .com dashboard and costs $13 per year. Worth it ??
    Can’t bring the SEO with me but never mind!
