• On paper, Ultimate Member should be a great plugin, and actually in many ways it is. However it has some pretty big faults that can’t be ignored.

The latest releases have been full of bugs – I appreciate they’ve re-written the entire code base for 2.0 but this was in beta for several months and some of the issues like complete breakdown of permissions, or broken navigation are inexcusable for a plugin that uses it’s ability restrict content based on permissions as one of its key selling points!

Second, support is awful. Tickets go selectively ignored on the WordPress forum. Some issues may be minor in comparison to others, but at the very least a ‘we’ll get back to you’ would be great! You can of course get ‘faster’ support if you’re a paid customer. But the only wait to achieve that is to buy extensions. In my case, I didn’t need those extensions, but actually would quite happily pay for paid support if I had faith they’d be able to help. I don’t.

From a developer perspective, UM is actually very hard to work with. Overriding the look and feel is a painful experience thanks to excessive use of non-standards compliant CSS and the !important declaration. And finally, don’t expect stellar peformance… over 40 individual, non-minimized CSS and JS files are loaded on every page load.

So until they’re able to fix the big issues with version 2, and they get they offer better support I recommend looking for alternatives.
