• Hi –
I’ve been trying to resolve an issue on my site for a while with no success. I haven’t even wanted to bring it to the forum because I’m not sure where the problem is really happening or if I can adequately describe it to get help. It’s also possible that I screwed something up really obvious. Anyway, here goes…

Basically, my category pages and feeds aren’t working. If you load a category, you get a 404 message. If you try to load a category feed,

You can see this happening here:

    https://www.friends-bwca.org/category/sulfide-mining/

    I have a category w/ the slug “sulfide-mining”.

I have tried many times to change the permalinks, to update my .htaccess, etc.

    A few things to know:

    1. I use a static homepage.
    2. I believe I had previously had category permalinks set up like
      https://www.friends-bwca.org/news/category/sulfide-mining/
    3. I also have a page with the URL https://www.friends-bwca.org/news/
    4. I have been using two separate “blogs” on the site, simply using sub-categories of a “blogs” category, called “boundary-waters-digest” and “the-portage”

I really don’t know what else to say. I can provide more info if someone even knows the right questions to ask. A million thanks in advance.

    Greg

  • Try resetting your custom permalinks back to the default setting. If this works, then review Using_Permalinks before setting a custom permalink structure back up again.

esmi – Thanks so much. That was a good step in the right direction. When I reset the custom permalinks to the default, the category pages work.

But, because I’d like to have “pretty” permalinks, I’m now trying to get that set up, referring to Using Permalinks.

When I just set the permalinks to the “common settings” of “month and name” and leave the category and tag base alone, it still doesn’t seem to work.

To test it, I just put “the_category” on my single.php template to try the link WP creates for that. You can see it displayed here:

    https://www.friends-bwca.org/2011/04/two-groups-set-sights-on-hudson-bay/

    {category: blog, boundary waters digest)

But when you click the link to either category, it still gives a not found! I can’t figure it out.

    Thanks.

Wait, stop. I think I got it. And if I did, it’s extremely stupid.

Dang. Never mind. Help still needed and appreciated.

Looking at your menu, you seem to be using news as your category base.

Thanks again. I know it looks like that, but that’s part of my confusion. On my permalinks configuration page, the “Category base” is empty. Any other ideas?

Are you using any redirection plugins? Is News and all if it’s sub-menu items Pages of Posts as opposed to actual category listings?

    (@gregseitz)

No, not using a redirection plugin. I do have “news” set as the “posts” page, since my homepage is static.

    Thanks again…
